ABOUT MAPBIOMAS
MapBiomas is an international collaborative network that originated in Brazil in July 2015. It brings together civil society organizations, universities, research labs, and technology companies, combining expertise in remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), data science, and environmental information. We produce systematic, transparent, and open-access spatial data using semi-automated methodologies and time series that enable consistent, scientifically rigorous monitoring of land-use and land-cover changes.
At the global level, MapBiomas has become a platform that integrates national and regional initiatives under shared principles, promoting data comparability and strengthening environmental monitoring worldwide.
In Peru, MapBiomas has more than eight years of continuous work generating and updating geospatial information on land dynamics. To date, the network has developed multiple initiatives and thematic modules that deepen the understanding of changes across the country. These include land cover and land use maps and datasets from 1985 to the present, covering vegetation loss, secondary vegetation, water bodies and glaciers, as well as burned areas.

ABOUT THE MAPBIOMAS ALERT INITIATIVE
The MapBiomas Alert initiative is a system for validating and refining deforestation alerts using high-resolution satellite imagery (Planet, 3.7 m).
Through the MapBiomas Alert platform, we publish alerts generated by multiple detection systems. Each alert undergoes validation, refinement, and temporal delimitation, along with spatial cross-referencing with relevant territorial information (such as district, province, region, communities, protected areas, etc.).
For every published alert, we provide a detailed, ready-to-use report that is openly and freely accessible. The MapBiomas Alert initiative reports all forest vegetation loss, without assessing legality, compliance, or responsibility for the vegetation removal.
OUR PURPOSE
MapBiomas Peru aims to reveal land-use and land-cover changes across the country through science, with precision, speed, and quality. We work to make this knowledge accessible in order to support ecosystem conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources as a way to address climate change.
Our goal within MapBiomas Alert is to monitor and make public every deforestation event or conversion of forest vegetation in Peru.
It is important to emphasize that MapBiomas Alert is not an additional deforestation detection system, but rather an effort to increase the reliability, usability, and effectiveness of alerts already generated by existing systems.
All data produced are public and free, and can be accessed through the platform: https://plataforma.peru.alerta.mapbiomas.org/
